Uniform Interstate Family Support Act
The Uniform Interstate Family Support Act (UIFSA) was created in 1992 and amended several times following the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction and Enforcement Act. In 1998, the Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Act added that states must accept this regulation in order to receive federal support for child support enforcement. It dictates that only one state can have jurisdiction at a time and that all 50 states must comply with the decision made by that state. The initial state which had jurisdiction will continue to do so for any possible future changes to the custody agreement. This prevents one parent from moving and filing for a change of custody in the new state that might conflict with previous agreements made elsewhere.
